A sudden volcanic eruption occurred on White Island/Whakaari in New Zealand, with deaths and injuries. The eruption occurred on Monday at 2:00 PM local time.

Many of the travelers involved were guests sailing on the Ovation of the Seas. Tourists from New Zealand, Australia, the US, Great Britain, China and Malaysia are among the missing.

The website of The Guardian reports that as of this writing, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that 5 people are confirmed dead and 31 are hospitalized.

Two explosions occurred, throwing up a huge ash plume that could be seen from the North Island. Local police don’t expect to locate survivors, due to the scale and nature of the disaster.

CBS Evening Television News reported Monday evening US time that Prime MinisterArdern says the area is still too dangerous to search. CBS confirmed that there are Americans who haven’t been accounted for.
