If you’ve been thinking about taking your first cruise, this is the time to put away the parka and exchange it for your summer swimwear. Cruising is a great way to travel and see the world. It’s a great way to travel–unpack once, and still be transported to multiple destinations.
Currently, it’s “Wave Season” when cruise bookings surge (the term doesn’t refer to rough seas!). So get booking!
If you’re a first-time cruiser, you’re in for a real treat. These suggestions will help make sure that you have the time of your life.
Why spend hours and hours behind the computer researching for the best cruise deals? Let someone else do the work for you. Find a knowledgable travel agent, and build a relationship with him or her. It’s important that they know everything about how you travel–how you like your beds set up as gay travelers, etc.
Travel agents can find the best options for you that meet your needs and budget. They are also there when things might not go according to planned or if you need to make last minute changes.
Agents who book high volume often have access to perks which they can pass onto you.
With all of the cruising options today, choose an agent who knows the industry well and more importantly your individual needs.
Do you like to party far into the night or are you looking for more of a relaxing vacation? Do you want to cruise alone or would you rather be with an all-gay or gay group? No matter what your lifestyle or interest is today, there is a cruise for you.
Do your homework carefully and as we previously mentioned, consult with a travel agent. Investigate what other gay and lesbian travelers say about specific cruise lines , ships, all-gay or gay group cruises. There is a wealth of information out there and people love to talk about their past cruise experiences.
Some aspects of travel, like flying to your destination, going through security checkpoints and waiting in line to board the ship can be time-consuming. But don’t let those few annoying minutes define your whole vacation. Keep a positive attitude and decide that you are going to have a good time — no matter what!
Travel is always so much more interesting when you know something about the history and culture of your destinations. The ship’s crew will be glad to answer any questions you may have, and the library is usually well-stocked with books about where you are going. Doing your homework before departing will definitely enhance your travel experience.
Cruise ships offer activities from ballroom dancing classes to wine tasting to poker lessons. Better yet, many of these activities come at no extra charge. Are you the shy type? Make sure you attend the LGBT gatherings (often called “Friends of Dorothy” ) at least once on your cruise where you have the opportunity to make new friends. Don’t be afraid to jump right in and try something you’ve never done before.
Cruise ships offer a selection of Las Vegas/Broadway style reviews and shows with gorgeous costumes and a variety of music types. You can also attend standup comedy performances, go to lectures on a range of subjects, and watch first run movies. Most of these activities won’t cost you an extra dime.
Cruise companies go to a great deal of trouble to identify and contract with the best local tourist groups. These groups offer outings to the most popular and interesting sites at each destination. Yes, the prices may run a little high, but you you’ll find comfortable transportation and knowledgeable guides. You can also pre-book your excisions through several other online companies to save money. We recently partnered with Shore Excursions Group where our members give us great reviews.
Many gay travelers enjoy connecting with gay tour guides or business in ports when possible — the internet does make this easier, but you’ll need to do your homework (we’re also working to bring you more information about this in the future). Here’s info on an gay tour option that may still be possible in Anchorage, Alaska.
Whether you’re on board the ship or enjoying some time ashore, follow basic safety rules. You do remember the recent Costa Concordia disaster? Don’t use illegal drugs or drink to the point that your judgment is impaired. Don’t wander too far off the beaten path. Oh…don’t kiss or hold hands in Russia. The gay propaganda law is still very much in force. ‘Nuff said.
If you tend to be queasy, book a cabin in the lower mid-section of the ship. It’s also a good idea to pack an over the counter seasickness remedy such as Dramamine. (You can buy seasickness remedies on board the ship as well, but expect to pay an arm and a leg for them.) With stabilizer technologies today, you most likely won’t know you’re on a ship.
Cruise ships don’t use a cash system. Instead, they ask you to place a credit card on file with them. They then link the credit card to your room key. You use your room key to charge purchases on the ship. This system is handy, but it can make it a little difficult to keep track of exactly how much you are spending. Add up your receipts daily to make sure that you are staying within your budget. Those cocktails at the martini bar can really start adding up fast.
Now relax, prepare to be pampered and enjoy your very first cruise!
