Atlantis Allure of the Seas 02/06/11
This won’t be a long review or rundown of the cruise, but a few observations from someone older than 65 who only dances a few seconds at the t-dances and only drops by the all-night dances to see a few costumes before going to bed, to sleep. And on this cruise I only entered the Solarium once during the dance because it was waaaaayyyy TOO LOUD for me to stand to be in the area. (On other ships, out on the pool deck, you can avoid being blasted by those huge speakers.)

The entertainment was outstanding. Cheyenne Jackson was phenomenal and it was a shame he was limited to only a 55 minute show. He has only gotten better since I saw him on the Eurodam a couple of years ago. I did not like Andy Bell, but others loved his show. I walked out because it was too loud and his voice sounded nearly gone. (I heard later he was fighting a cold.) But he was putting on a show, not just standing and singing. Pam Ann and Miss Richfield are always great fun and both had their time on the main stage. The RCCL’s Chicago and Blue Planet were both wonderful, though again Blue Planet was so loud that the music was distorted. The sound man must be deaf already and wants others to join him.

There was so much going on I never got to see all the cabaret acts, but Pamela Stanley and Rick & Emily were both excellent. Sherry Vine was only OK. Jim David and Shawn Palofsky were both great. Brad Leokle did a fun session too, though he wasn’t as funny as Jim and Shawn. And the OceanAria show at the Aqua Theater was amazing. Even the show for children with Dreamworks characters was great fun. And no children there.

And the ship! The ship is just amazing and wonderful and beautiful and…. It is big and it takes a while to figure out which way to go. And there are so many places to see and things to do that it is almost, but not quite, overwhelming. It is too bad the food quality in the main dining room doesn’t match the beautiful space. Presentation was good, service was mostly good, but the food was mostly mediocre to poor. (And on the top floor of the dining room that have bright video displays art that are so very out of place and very annoying if you happen to be facing one while trying to eat. )

It was a great week. Worth every penny. But now I have done the Allure and I won’t be booking next year’s Atlantis cruise on the same ship.

Make sure you add this cruise to your profile under ‘wish list’. Lots of surfers are looking at this section.

Are you on Atlantis’ waiting list? I’m sure there will be cancellations between now and next February, especially when those final payments come due.

HI Darrel, I did get added to the waiting list with Atlantis thanks. Rick

Lower fares on European itineraries are offering some decent value for all-gay cruises. Check out my blog post at http://meetmeonboard.com/blog/2010/04/lower-fares-on-all-gay-atlantis-cruises-good-cruise-value/

    Atlantis or RSVP?

Partner and I have never been on an all-gay cruise and are debating between Atlantis or RSVP? Has anybody been on both and can give their impression of the difference? We both still enjoy a good party but also love our down-time to relax. The marketing makes it appear that RSVP might have a slightly older crowd and not quite as party oriented. I’m leaning towards RSVP.

My partner & I have been on both. They are both good. RSVP does seem to have a slightly older demographic and a bit fewer of the “party all night” crowd. But both give you space and time to relax if that is what you want to do. If you do everything, you will be very busy and will have to make some choices. But you don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to. We are in our 60′s and don’t dance more than a few minutes, but enjoy seeing all the costumes and hearing the music. We make sure we get a cabin where the music won’t bother us and are usually asleep by 1 AM or so, no matter what the party is that night. Everyone is so nice and so friendly, it is a pleasure. We choose whichever company has the ship we want to go on. Last year it was the Eurodam with RSVP. This year it is the Solstice with Atlantis. And next year it will probably be Allure of the Seas with Atlantis. We love them all.

My partner and I have been on two all gay cruises. The first Atlantis, the second RSVP. Both were good, but I prefered the RSVP best. It was a small sailing vessel out of Barbados. The ship only held 200 passengers, which I loved! We had a chance to meet a lot of people and really enjoyed the cruise. The Atlantis cruise had 2000+ passengers and was party central. Guess I’m showing my age here, but I prefer smaller and more intimate.

The Royal Clipper is a wonderful ship, but very different than the cruise ships. We took it with RSVP out of Cannes. It was wonderful, but the experience was nothing like the larger ships. We have never down the Caribbean on a small ship.

In some ways we like RSVP best too, but we are going with Atlantic this year and next because we like the ships better on Atlantis. And the ship is a big part of the experience. Both are so much fun.

    Another death on board Atlantis

I just read about another death on board the Atlantis cruise. This happened in Grand Cayman which we know isn’t the most gay friendly island in the Caribbean. You can read about it in the most recent Advocate Magazine.

I just heard about this too. My good friends where on the Atlantis October cruise to Mexico where someone also died. I personally believe it’s just coincidence. I’m sure someone died on most of the cruises that I have taken although one never hears about it.

Very tragic. I’m inclined to agree with Steve that it happens more than we ever hear about. My Grandmother just passed away after months in a nursing home and I can honestly say that given the choice I’d much rather leave this world enjoying myself on a cruise.

Very good point. When my ‘time’ comes, I hope it’s quick and on the seas.

I read somewhere that it was a suicide due to a broken relationship.

      Sad.
