2 U.S. men arrested on Atlantis Events cruise

After you read this article, please see our blog that we posted only a week ago. Your comments are encouraged. Should we as gay and lesbian people travel where we are not welcomed?

    ————————————————

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Two California men on a gay cruise of the Caribbean were arrested Wednesday in Dominica, where sex between two men is illegal.

Police Constable John George said police boarded the cruise ship and arrested the two men on suspicion of indecent exposure and “buggery,” a term equivalent to sodomy on the island. He identified the men as John Robert Hart, 41, and Dennis Jay Mayer, 43, but did not provide their hometowns.

George said the men were seen having sex on the Celebrity Summit cruise ship by someone on the dock.

The two were later charged with indecent exposure and are scheduled to appear before a magistrate Thursday morning. If found guilty, they could be fined $370 each and face up to six months in jail.

The ship carrying about 2,000 passengers departed Puerto Rico on Saturday and arrived in Dominica on Wednesday. It departed for St. Barts without the men, who are being held in a cell at police headquarters in the capital of Roseau.

The cruise was organized by Atlantis Events, a Southern California company that specializes in gay travel.

President Rich Campbell, who is aboard the cruise, said in a phone interview earlier that he thought the two men would be released. He later said in an email that the company has organized many trips to Dominica and would “happily return.”

“Many countries and municipalities that gay men visit and live in have antiquated laws on their books,” he said. “These statutes don’t pose a concern to us in planning a tourist visit.”

Campbell said he expects the two men to be released on Thursday and that they only face misdemeanor charges.

“The guests’ actions were unfortunate but minor in this case and have no bearing on our overall guest experience,” he said via email.

The pastor of Dominica’s Trinity Baptist Church, Randy Rodney, praised the police for their intervention.

“I am very pleased that the police were called in and have arrested the people in question. I have warned about gay tourism and its implications for Dominica,” said Rodney, who is a vocal critic of homosexuality and lesbianism.

The presence of gay cruises in the Caribbean has riled several conservative islands including Jamaica and Grenada, where anti-sodomy laws are enforced with strong backing from religious groups.

According to Cruisemates.com, no gay cruise lines sail to Jamaica or Barbados for fear of homophobia and possible violence. It said other places like the U.S. Virgin Islands welcome gay cruises.

In 2010, the Cayman Islands rejected the arrival of an Atlantis gay cruise amid protests from religious groups even though homosexuality is legal on the archipelago.

Don Weiner, a spokesman for Atlantic Events, referred all questions to Campbell, including why the company organized a trip to Dominica and whether it knew about the island’s anti-sodomy laws.

Elizabeth Jakeway, a spokeswoman for Celebrity Cruises, referred all questions to Atlantis.

The last time authorities in the Caribbean intervened on a gay cruise was in February 2011, when agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrested a California man aboard the Allure of the Seas, which had docked in St. Thomas. The man, Steven Barry Krumholz of West Hollywood, pleaded guilty to selling ecstasy, methamphetamine and ketamine to fellow passengers.

    Man overboard on Atlantis cruise

The Sun UK says the unnamed passenger who fell off an Atlantis all-gay cruise “intentionally went overboard”. Royal Caribbean representatives who reviewed the security tapes said the British man did not fall accidentally and was not pushed over the railings.

The 30-year-old passenger plunged from his balcony on deck 11 of luxury liner Allure of the Seas in waters off Mexico… The ship made multiple public announcements and began a complete search of the ship, in efforts to locate the guest. When the guest did not respond to the pages and was not found onboard, the captain alerted the local authorities of the situation. Our care team is providing support to the guest’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Atlantis has had it’s share of ‘events’ recently on their cruises. What are your thoughts?

Tags: Mark Farris in the Oosterdam Piano bar

Everyone sailing on the Atlantis charter of Holland America’s MS Oosterdam departing San Diego on October 15 has a real treat waiting for them in the Piano Bar. I was on the repositioning cruise to San Diego from Vancouver, and the highlight of the voyage was each evening I spent listening to Mark Farris singing Pop songs and Broadway melodies. Mark is a terrific entertainer with a wonderfully humorous air that instantly makes everyone feel welcome. You can sit back and listen, join in the chorus, or maybe even get the opportunity to sing a solo with this marvelous entertainer. I rarely hang out in any ship’s piano bar, but Mark changed my attitude. I regret being shy and not grasping the opportunity of having this incredible entertainer help me stumble through a song or two, but I hope to have a second chance to discover my inner Broadway baby sometime in the future as Mark publishes his itineraries on his web site. In the meantime, everyone traveling on the Oosterdam next week should take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy Mark’s company and check out his performance in the piano bar as you sail the Mexican Riveria!

MMOB SOUND OFF: Share Your Thoughts about MeetMeOnBoard.com site features

One of you met the love of your life on MeetMeOnBoard. That is a story I’m sure all the members would enjoy hearing. If you have a great MMOB tale please drop me an e-mail so I can include it in a future article about how the members use the site.

In our recent membership survey we asked you specifically how you use the various features on MeetMeOnBoard and which additions you’d like to see in the future.

Since the survey we’ve added a forum, complete with MeetMeOnBoard Roll Calls so you can post your cruise there for people to find you.

Of course all of you who have booked an upcoming cruise and posted it on your profile know you are automatically connected with everyone who is also listed on that cruise through our Cruise Mates feature. This is yet another reason you should tell your friends who haven’t signed up on MeetMeOnBoard yet.

I’d like to hear from members who absolutely love a particular feature of the site. Are you a HUGE fan of the new and improved Cruise Calendar — the only LGBT cruise calendar in existence?

Do you love to read the latest cruise news in News & Expert Advice? Are you growing to love the new Forum or is the Muster Station a place you just can’t resist?

Are you meeting folks from the site on the ships and forming friendships? We certainly hope so. After all, that’s why we started the site–to connect LGBT cruise travelers with one another before setting sail. Since then we’ve grown into the largest LGBT cruise travel social network, thanks to you.

Let me know what you love about MeetMeOnBoard features, where’d you’d like to see the site grow in the future and if social media and mobile apps are a direction we should embrace next.

Can’t wait to hear your stories. Please send me an MMOB mail or e-mail michael@meetmeonboard.com.

    Thanks,

    Michael Bradbury

MMOB SOUND OFF: Share Your Thoughts about gay group, all-gay, and mainstream cruising

Do you and your boyfriend feel the need to steel away on an Atlantis or RSVP cruise to get away from the heterosexual mainstream? Are you and your girlfriend frequent travelers with Olivia because you want to be among like-minded lesbians? If you prefer all-gay cruise travel over mainstream drop me a line.

But based on our recent survey the vast majority of you sail mainstream cruises not all-gay charters. I’d like to know why.

Do you not fee the need to escape to fun. Do you not fee the need to escape to funin the sun with 2,500 other gay people? Would you rather meet new friends — gay and straight — on regular departure?

I’d like to hear your thoughts about traveling as a gay couple or single on a mainstream cruise. Why do you prefer that? Is it price, destination, or just personal preference?

The hybrid way to travel between all-gay and mainstream is gay-group. These are becoming very popular. Several companies have sprung up in the last few years to create special events and experiences for gay cruise passengers on a mainstream sailing. Do you like to travel with a small group of gay people but be part of a larger overall cruise community? Why?

Feel free to drop me a note at marketing@meetmeonboard.com, comment here or contact me via MMOB Mail.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

    Happy Friday,

    Michael Bradbury
    MMOB Director of Marketing

MMOB Forum will be launching soon!

We’re very excited to be launching our new Forum in the very near future. We will be announcing the launch on both our newsletter and here on The Muster Station. Please read the information below on how you will be able to use both of these features to enhance your cruising experience.

    THE MUSTER STATION

Every cruise ship worth a salt requires all passengers to grab a life vest (usually from some tucked away crawl space) and head to a lounge, casino, lobby or meeting room to learn where to gather in case of an emergency.

We’ve all been there, standing in many a casino, leaning against a craps table with our ridiculous orange vests (that never match our outfits) scanning the room—not for the nearest exit—but looking for other LGBT passengers, kindred spirits in a sea of straight couples and kids.

I for one have fantasized about what everyone at the muster station must be thinking. Are they sizing up the passengers, planning shore excursions or just taking it all in, slightly overwhelmed by the cruise ship experience?

Borrowing from the necessity of gathering in one location before the ship sails, MeetMeOnBoard has adopted the name and the concept in our own, much more fun, version of The Muster Station.

It’s a gathering place for sure. But instead of listening silently to instructions from your crew, you are encouraged to jump into conversations with other members. You can do anything here (within reason, please).

Since launching this social media experiment last year, we’ve had hundreds of members join the conversation. Some have become prolific live bloggers, using The Muster Station as a personal cruise diary. Others have used it to shout to the masses that they need cabin mates. A few have posted heartwarming stories and others have posed serious questions.

Unlike other features of MeetMeOnBoard, The Muster Station is organized chronologically with the most recent post at the top of the page. It allows you instant access to comment and those comments are threaded below the original post.

One of the most exciting elements of The Muster Station is that it travels far and wide. Because we built the page to be a realtime conversation tool, Google loves it and makes it easy to search online. That also means what happens in the Muster Station doesn’t stay in the Muster Station.

There are so many great nuggets of cruise wisdom to be found there, you should definitely spend some time sifting through the conversation. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to separate out some of the topics from The Muster Station and put them in their own spot so they could be easily searched? Oh wait, there is.

    THE FORUM

Okay, we admit it. We are trying to be the LGBT Cruise Critic, sort of. One of the great things about that other site is its ability to give people a platform to talk about specific topics and to tell others that they will be traveling on the same ship. MeetMeOnBoard does the same thing but has more options for the LGBT cruise passenger.

Now we will be adding a Forum (which you have been requesting for quite some time) to our range of online offerings. It will work like any other forum, where someone starts a thread in a specific category and the conversation begins when more and more members respond to that initial thought. To create a little privacy wall between the Forum and the rest of the world we deliberately added a security step.

Once you sign in to the forum, just below the FAQs you will first notice the Crow’s Nest. We figured that would be the best place to get an overall view of the Forum landscape.

Here we have OPEN DISCUSSIONS and Cruise Critic Refugees. The OPEN DISCUSSIONS is a place where you will be able to write pretty much anything about cruise travel—whatever your heart’s desire. As this gets populated with sub categories you’ll see them being listed out down below. For now, we’ll put all general cruise conversations in that spot.

For those intrepid LGBT cruisers who’ve been relegated to the back pages of the LGBT board at Cruise Critic, we are bringing you front and center into the light. It’s still a private forum but you get the idea. We will feature you and your threads from that other site so hop over there and migrate (copy-paste) your conversations from there to here. And have fun with it.

Under the Crow’s Nest you will find the very familiar Roll Call: Meet Me On Board. It’s our version of Roll Calls, where we HIGHLY encourage you to post a quick note about your upcoming cruise. Just say, “I’m going on the XX cruise on XX date.” It’s that easy. You can of course say something else if you choose. It’s up to you. You’ll find the Roll Call broken into three alphabetical groups. Find your cruise line and voila!

Speaking of cruise lines, below Roll Call, you’ll notice we have the same three categories for cruise lines. This is the place to post general information about the ships. If you traveled on a Holland America ship and loved a meal, tell us about it in the general discussion. Or if you didn’t care for the ice skaters’ outfits on a Carnival cruise, we definitely want to hear about that here, too.

The rest of the forum will be arranged by general discussions about LGBT cruises (including all-gay, gay group and lesbian) and port cities and destinations. Here we want to hear the scoop on the latest Sweet and Atlantis sailings. Tell us about your taxi ride in Acapulco or your harrowing hang gliding experience in Jamaica.

The Forum v. The Muster Station

Look, this isn’t a celebrity death-match showdown between the Forum and The Muster Station. They are both wonderful and engaging (dare we say exciting) ways to further the conversation and grow the MeetMeOnBoard community. They are just different.

The Muster Station is a general realtime, bloggy place where the conversation is always going. It’s the place to see what’s happening right now and to jump into discussion as they unfold. It’s live. It’s now. It’s happening. It’s public. It’s also sometimes difficult to find what you want.

That’s where the Forum takes over. The forum is a permanent collection of discussions, conversations and debate. It’s intuitive and arranged by topic not by date. It’s a private conversation archive so only members who are signed in can view the forum.

Here’s where The Muster Station and the Forum overlap.

Conversations in The Muster Station don’t migrate automatically to the Forum after a certain period of time (though we wish they would.) You’ll notice that some of the most popular posts in The Muster Station now have twin postings in the Forum. This is just a way to keep those conversations going since they will likely get supplanted by something newer, sexier and glitzier in The Muster Station.

MeetMeOnBoard will continue to offer you many ways to communicate. Rather than driving how you should converse we will offer you a menu of choices and you just pick the most comfortable for you. If you love the old easy chair feel of the Forum then that’s terrific. If you want the speed and nowness The Muster Station, then that’s perfectly understandable. If you want the immediacy of seeing the MeetMeOnBoard members who are traveling on your exact cruise departure, then be sure to list your upcoming cruises on your profile page and use the AMAZING Cruise Mates feature. It’s so cooooooool.

The best thing to do is experiment. Try a little of the Forum. Mix in a skosh of The Muster Station and a big dollop of Cruise Mates and see how it enhances your overall MeetMeOnBoard experience.

Any cruisers out there who would like to join us on a Clipper Ship cruise. I’m trying to get RSVP/Atlantis to offer one again. Our last one, The Royal Clipper, was a breathtaking, romantic and cozy experience, being a smaller passenger count. Speak up !!!!!

Atlantis Allure of the Seas 02/06/11
This won’t be a long review or rundown of the cruise, but a few observations from someone older than 65 who only dances a few seconds at the t-dances and only drops by the all-night dances to see a few costumes before going to bed, to sleep. And on this cruise I only entered the Solarium once during the dance because it was waaaaayyyy TOO LOUD for me to stand to be in the area. (On other ships, out on the pool deck, you can avoid being blasted by those huge speakers.)

The entertainment was outstanding. Cheyenne Jackson was phenomenal and it was a shame he was limited to only a 55 minute show. He has only gotten better since I saw him on the Eurodam a couple of years ago. I did not like Andy Bell, but others loved his show. I walked out because it was too loud and his voice sounded nearly gone. (I heard later he was fighting a cold.) But he was putting on a show, not just standing and singing. Pam Ann and Miss Richfield are always great fun and both had their time on the main stage. The RCCL’s Chicago and Blue Planet were both wonderful, though again Blue Planet was so loud that the music was distorted. The sound man must be deaf already and wants others to join him.

There was so much going on I never got to see all the cabaret acts, but Pamela Stanley and Rick & Emily were both excellent. Sherry Vine was only OK. Jim David and Shawn Palofsky were both great. Brad Leokle did a fun session too, though he wasn’t as funny as Jim and Shawn. And the OceanAria show at the Aqua Theater was amazing. Even the show for children with Dreamworks characters was great fun. And no children there.

And the ship! The ship is just amazing and wonderful and beautiful and…. It is big and it takes a while to figure out which way to go. And there are so many places to see and things to do that it is almost, but not quite, overwhelming. It is too bad the food quality in the main dining room doesn’t match the beautiful space. Presentation was good, service was mostly good, but the food was mostly mediocre to poor. (And on the top floor of the dining room that have bright video displays art that are so very out of place and very annoying if you happen to be facing one while trying to eat. )

It was a great week. Worth every penny. But now I have done the Allure and I won’t be booking next year’s Atlantis cruise on the same ship.
